Momentous Find
For John Pollock this discovery is life-changing. It has completely transformed his life. “I’ve been in some of the biggest caves in the world, and this thing has an entrance that is truly immense, and not just by Canadian standards,” expressed John Pollock to Canadian Geographic.
Why Was It Never Discovered Before?
First of all, this cave was huge and the team couldn’t understand why nobody ever noticed it before. But there was a reason why it had never been spotted in the past. It was because it’s so massive, a mountaineer wouldn’t have been able to climb it in the first place, forget about the exploration. Pollock was adamant that they were the first team to ever explore the cave.
Even More Unfathomable Facts
What’s more surprising, the team wasn’t able to find any records of the cave’s existence as if it just appeared that day while the team was in the helicopter. “The entrance is sufficiently notable that [a] descent attempt would have been written up by mountaineers, cavers or park staff if it had been encountered in the past 40 or 50 years, no such account exists in caving or mountaineering literature,” Pollock told Canadian Geographic.
Hidden For Years
Another thing about the “Sarlacc’s Pit” is the location, which is very remote and very hard to find. And so because of that Pollock believes that it would have stayed hidden even for the passers-by. Thus it was only because the team was in the helicopter they were able to spot the cave otherwise it would have stayed hidden in Wells Gray.
Truly In The Middle Of Nowhere
“This cave is truly in the middle of nowhere, it’s out there in mountainous terrain, surrounded by glaciers and at the bottom of a 45-degree avalanche slope that rises 2,000 to 2,500 feet above it, meaning you can’t go to it in winter. This is a wild place,” Pollock said to Canadian Geographic.
Remote Location
Regardless of the cave’s secret location, Pollock was very adamant on knowing the cave’s precise’s location. Now when the cave has been discovered they need to study about the cave in depth. Experts are working hard to and it is believed that the team would again start the big research in 2020.
