Newfound Fame
The show and their remarkable story had boosted the popularity of Maroney and LeShay. Her mother describes the situation post-show. She said “LeShay is famous! Everyone has been coming up to us every day, asking us about it.” LeShay, on the other hand, brought the negative aspect of it. She said, “yeah, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to run bleachers when I go back to school because I missed practices.”
Military Influence
Maroney coming from military background had a great influence on LeShay. The influence was so much that the girl decided to get enrolled in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, also known as JROTC. The Training center aims at teaching “students in secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.”
Following His Footsteps
When asked LeShay explained why she Chose JROTC. She said “it was very interesting and a challenge, and because I had never done it before. I knew if I joined I would have help from Mike along the way if I needed it, or was confused about anything.” Maroney was constantly in touch with LeShay during her training. Just like her parents, he too was excited about the new chapter of LeShay’s life.
One Question
JROTC was organizing a ball for its students. It was then LeShay asked Maroney to become his partner. Maroney always wanted to thank her and this could be the perfect chance to do so. He said “I’m going because I would do anything to repay the hug to LeShay and her family. They mean as much to me as my own.”
The Dance
This amazing pair entered the party held at Mississippi community center. The pair captured everyone’s attention. LeShay knew that Maroney would be the perfect companion. According to her “nobody else” was suitable enough to be her date. The two enjoyed the party by dancing and singing.
Addressing The Crowd
Maroney came all the way from Texas to become the date of LeShay. No need to say, the duo became the center of attraction of the soiree. Maroney discussed his military life after hurricane Katrina. There also he did not forget to admire his little girl in front of the crowd. He said “she [LeShay] just survived one of the most massive hurricanes in American history. If she’s smiling, I can smile too.”
