Hurricane Katrina

New Orleans katrinaHurrican Katrina destroyed many lives. If you know anything about Hurricane Katrina you might know that it is the most horrendous calamity every to befall on the U.S. It impacted not only humans but the environment too, for instance, the Gulf Coast had its entire landscape changed because of disaster. Hurrican Katrina was declared category 1 storm by the time it reached Florida’s coast on August 25, 2005. The intensity of hurricane compelled Jeb Bush, then Governor to declare an emergency. However, the hurricane kept on growing more dangerous with every passing hour. Just in the matter of a day, the category 1 hurricane graduated to category 2. After destroying Florida completely, hurricane Katrina with a speed of 80 miles per hour hit Louisiana. The situation in Louisiana had gone so bad that the governor of the very state Kathleen Blanco had to declare the emergency. Eventually, in order to curb the further damages, the White House had to step in. The National Guard troops were deployed in the impacted areas.

Katrina Heads To New Orleans

rita_evacuationNature had never gone so brutal on people of the U.S.! Before Hurricane Katrina could approach New Orleans, Mayor Ray Nagin went for voluntary evacuation in metro regions. However, nothing was really helping as the hurricane continued to intensify. It was 27 August, the four days old hurricane had taken its worst form. It had picked up the speed and now was running at the speed of 160 miles/hour. It was a category 5 hurricane.

Mandatory Evacuation

Now, evacuating the whole of town in a few hours was next to impossible. That is why the government decided upon the football stadium Superdome to accommodate the citizens. Well, this “last resort” shelter housed 25000 people. Despite having thousands of people crammed inside the stadium, there was still a big part of the city left outside fending for themselves. Not everyone was lucky enough to reach the Superdome.

It Was Too Late

weather-katrinaThey say, ‘It’s better late than never’ but here being late was as hazardous as never. The announcement of mandatory evacuation was made quite late and so the execution was hasty. As the rescue mission was supposed to be wrapped up before the tornado takes on the town, the rescuers tried to save as many people as they can. But still, there were many people who did not have personal vehicles stranded in their home. Maroney being a pararescue specialist tried to make most out of his skills. He extended his hand of help to each and every victim he came across.
