Largest Construction
The project is special in the sense that it is the largest construction project to happen to date thanks to the over 100,000 soldiers and 65000 GULAG workers who participated in the construction process that went on for decades.
Renamed
It was almost after eight years the Combine No. 815 got operational on August 28, 1958. However, the project was renamed as the Mining and Chemical Combine. It was constructed in the deepest region of the Siberian mountain with the purpose of producing plutonium.
Turning Into Reality
The weapons-grade plutonium that remained a secret for many years eventually got shaped into a nuclear warheads having the potential of killing masses in one go. It was like a dream come true for Soviets but the same was considered a nightmare for its rival superpower the United States and still a dream for the rest of the world.
Everything Exceptional
Not only the project but the building it was processing in was exceptional too. As the structure was built to shelter one of the dearest projects of the nation, it was engineered accordingly. Even after several years, the construction is considered as one of the best examples of engineering. So you are wondering what is it so special about this building? Well, it may interest you to know that the mountain that was surrounded by 200-meter of granite had the capability of facing a nuclear blast.
Facilities Included…..
The transportation facility of Mining and Chemical Combine included a real railway that had a striking resemblance to a New York City subway. However, the only difference was that unlike the New York City subway, here the railway used to transport materials in place of passengers throughout the plant.
Closed Town
The institution was located in the vicinity of Zheleznogorsk also known as “closed town” among the people of Krasnoyarsk Krai. It is called so the city does not allow entry to the ordinary Soviet citizens. In fact, the place is guarded with barbed wire to prevent any infiltration from the strangers.
