A few days later, Hannah was spotted at a Starbucks in SoHo, Manhattan. However, the police failed to make it in time as Hannah had already left the place before they arrived. But this wasn’t the last time they were seeing Hannah, after this incident, she was recorded as much as 5 times at the New York Sorts Clubs, where she most likely went to take a shower. “It was as if the city had simply opened wide and swallowed her whole,” one detective exclaimed!

Closing In

Hannah’s obtrusive behavior was hard to understand both for the police as well as her friends and family. They started to question if Hannah was in some sort of trouble or she had been hiding something strange as her demeanor was quite peculiar as seen in the footage. It didn’t take long for all their questions to be answered as they would get to know a bitter fact about Hannah after a week that would not only solve the mystery but also leave them baffled.

A Frightening Occurrence

Hannah Upp Found in Staten Island

After twenty days of run-and-chase, a body was found moving in the water on September 16, 2008, near Robbins Reef. It was when the captain of Staten Island ferry noticed a body swaying, and it looked as if the person was dead. A couple of men picked Hannah up by her shoulders and ankles and she was pretty much alive. She got up like a woman possessed, gasping for air and throwing up the water her lungs had filled up with. She was immediately rescued to Richmond University Medical Center, where the doctors drew a strange conclusion for Hannah’s recent behavior.

The Missing Pieces

Hannah had no sense or realization of what had happened and she started to ask why she was wet. After being rescued to the hospital, the doctors examined Hannah and asked her a couple of questions. She was able to answer the questions related to her, and also provided with her mother’s contact number. Her mother, Barbara, rushed straight to the hospital after receiving a call. Like any mother, Barbara was worried by what she had witnessed as Hannah had turned pale and sunburned due to what she had been through, but what really worried her was Hannah being unable to recall where she was in the last three weeks.

The Diagnosis

The doctors diagnosed Hannah with hypothermia, dehydration and serious sunburns, yet, she made a quick recovery. One of Hannah’s friends recalled her visit to the hospital, Hannah had this wide smile of hers spread throughout her cheeks and all she talked about was her excitement to get out soon and get back her classroom. She wasn’t aware that the school had already started 3 weeks ago.

Identity Crisis

Hannah Upp

After going through a series of tests with the doctors and further questioning and evaluations with psychiatrists, it came to the conclusion that Hannah had dissociative fugue, a condition in which a person is unable to recall some incident of their past or all their past, including loss of identity or assuming to be a new individual. “I went from going for a run to being in the ambulance. It was like 10 minutes had passed. But it was almost three weeks,” Hannah said.
