Though she was in front of her, Susie and Don always felt something off about Laura. No matter how much they tried they could not feel the connection with her as they used to have previously. Initially, they considered it a fear but the feeling was so persistent that they decided to do something about it. They even shared their thought with the doctor who came up with an amazing idea.
The Heartbreaking Moment
They gave Laura a piece of paper and asked her to write her name on it. What she wrote on it totally shattered Susie and Don. At first, they could not believe what were they seeing and when they realized the reality the two broke into tears. That was the worst thing ever happened to them.
Not Her
She wrote down WHITNEY, not Laura. Clearly, it meant that they had been living with some other girl mistaking her to be their daughter. Another question that popped out in their mind was where their daughter was? How did this all happen? How could they not recognize they were living with a stranger? Well, the answer to all these questions was only going to rub salt to their wound.
Hell Broke Loose
Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard University, Richard McNally explained, “The family members, they’re being told by the authorities that it , in fact, their daughter,” “The person in the hospital is rather badly banged up and bruised, and they might conceivably accept that verdict from the authorities.”
Another Revelation
After that, they asked Whitney her parents name and she wrote “Newell and Colleen.” The devastated Susie and Don decided to tell her parents about Whitney. Susie later explained, “Well, it was hard. but we knew where our daughter was…and we knew that Newell and Colleen needed to know where their daughter was.” When Don called he could clearly feel the grief in her parents’ voice. He himself choked with tears told them that her daughter was alive. She was in the hospital getting the treatment. There was a dead silence on the other end of the phone.
Telling Her Parents
Suddenly a shaking voice came from the other side. The man asked him not to joke about this. Don had already prepared himself for this answer. Nevertheless, he kept on reiterating and the man finally believed. The receiver weepingly asked about her whereabouts. It was a strange moment for both of them. He told her father all the requisite details.
