Unsatisfied

Though Bayliss made his successful discovery of Mount Mabu, his hunger for exploration was not satisfied. In 2012, he again started with his discovery in Mount Lico where he spotted a green-colored crater. He wanted to be utterly sure about what exactly was up there.

Sneak Peek

2012 was the year in which Bayliss decided to finally send a drone into the skies above Mount Lico. He struggled a bit while locating the area since the barriers were equally high.  It took Bayliss a couple of attempts to manage the drone and fly it over the barriers of the crater to have a sneak-peek of what was present there.

Live Tracking

The drone was connected to Bayliss’ phone and whatever the drone covered, Bayliss could see on his phone screen. The images that Bayliss and his team saw, confirmed that there is a hidden forest. Right after their confirmation, they prepared themselves for a real-life expedition to the site. By 2018, the team members gathered to start their mission and reach the height.

New Members

Two expert rock climbers named Jules Lines and Mike Robertson, who were the part of the team roped the crater walls and the other members scaled up the rock after them. These two climbers trained the whole team before actually scaling up. Mike Robertson later had an interview with The Guardian in which he stated that “learning to ascend a 125-meter [410-foot] cliff in the jungle is a lot to ask of people.”

The Team

The team also consisted of a few scientists from Mozambique, a cook, a doctor, a logistics specialist, and many other helping hands. They all contributed to the discovery and whatever they experienced on the top of Mount Lico was utterly breath-taking.

Conversation

The entire team had a conversation with The Verge after their journey. Jeff Barbee, a member of the team, while recalling informed that, “I was surrounded by butterflies, so many different kinds – some close, some small, some big, some… just so many butterflies.” He added, “I just stood there surrounded by them, panting and realizing that I was getting into something very special. It had that feeling to it.”
