Numerous news outlets were there to capture the evening’s activities. The pair were interviewed by the local TV station, where LeShay expressed her feelings, “He means a lot to me. He’s more like a family member than a friend.” While Maroney also had more to add, saying, “If she needed a heart or a lung, I would give it to her, that’s how important her hug and her family is to me.”

Future Plans

LeShay knows for sure that she will be joining the military, but is unsure of the specific branch. “I am proud of her no matter what she does and will support her in everything she does. I think she understands service and I believe that she will do great things no matter what she chooses,” was Maroney’s opinion on the matter.

Although Maroney had to retire from active duty due to an injury, he still endeavors to serve his country in other ways. He conducts lectures as well as helping people train for their battlefield jobs. He told People, “Life in service to the planet is important whether serving in the military or as a teacher, nurse or volunteer. Service makes life that much more appreciated.”

In summation of the entire experience, Mike Maroney had this to say to People: “I’ve rescued a lot of people, but there have also been a lot of people I couldn’t rescue. Life sometimes gets dark, knowing there are good people who love life and are happy, the resiliency that she had has been a strength for me.”
