Lesson Learned
After several years, Russia regained the control of the mine and this time it was the company Alrosa which got the control of the Mir Mine. The company started the expansion and went deeper this time in order to explore the mine to fullest. By 2001, the company was able to make the mine fully underground and all the activities were now conducted underground.
End Of The Mine
In the year 2004, the Mir Mine met its fate when due to major flooding the mine suffered some severe damage in the tunnel which made the mining impossible. Alrosa was forced to end the work and the mine which worked for 44-years was left abandoned. But there was more to the Mir Mine’s fate.
New Life
After the company Alrosa was forced to shut down the mine it was the construction company AB Elise that proposed a plan to transform the mine. The government approved their proposal and the company was able to turn this massive hole into an amazing underground city of the future and the 3D-models are out for us to see.
Eco-City 2020
They named it “Eco-City 2020”, the project is believed to change the way of living. In this project, a city would be built underground that would be able to house around 100,000 residents. The whole city would channel on solar energy and which represents the harmony between urbanism and nature and promote eco-friendly tourism.
Long Way To Go
The Mir Mine resumed the work in 2009 and was believed to function for at least 50 years. But things didn’t go as planned and they had to close it. Though mine workers lost their jobs the Mir Mine now fulfilled another purpose. But who could have thought that a hole would change the future like this?
