Do Not Touch

She placed the letters down very carefully. Though the woman felt the urge of repairing the tattered corners of the piece of paper she preferred not to touch it. She wanted to preserve its historical importance. As she put them down on the table three letters protruded. Two of them were full letters while the rest was partial letters. The letters were addressed to the soldier’s father, mother, and brother.

What A Moment

The woman had a mixture of tears, curiosity, and astonishment in her eyes. It was an overwhelming moment for her. Each sentence of the letter was describing the hardship of the soldier and his yearning to come back home. The woman had someone’s life story before her. Along with that, there were descriptions of the bloodiest war in the history of America.

Important Part

No need to say that the letters were important and Boes was well aware of that. Though the letter was addressed to her for some unknown reason she decided to take the help of her senior to find out the origin of this letter. At the same time she was well aware of the fact that the letter was too fragile to carry it in hand and take it anywhere. She rang up her boss.

In Person

Boes explained, “You’re not going to believe what I just received.” She added, “I’ll deliver them in person. They’re too precious to trust to the mails.” Irony must have had its hardest laugh that day. She got into her car and drove off to Grand Rapids to her boss. Her boss was only 45 minutes away.

He Was Surprised Too

Chuck Howe too was astounded after learning about the letters and its content. Though he was excited he still was not sure if it was an authentic one or just a prank by someone. Both of them were seasoned postal employees but they had never come across something like this. They were not sure but they were hopeful that it was a real letter judging from its content.

A Soldier

It was Virginia from where the soldier had sent those letters and he was battling for the union cause. He described some scenes that described boring soldierly duties. Then in some, he expressed his grief of losing his brothers in battle. But all these situations shed significant light on the nature of the battle.
