There Was A Ballroom!
The mansion is barely a few miles away from the center of Times Square but it is still not visited even by the trespassers. There has been graffiti drawn by what only could be notorious elements but other than that the mansion has stood the brunts of time and is slowly decaying.
This room could only be what we call the ballroom where the gentlemen and the ladies gathered for social meets and danced. The pianos and the chandelier only affirm this as this is what a cliched victorian ballroom looks like.
What’s Left Of The Tennis Court
Having an indoor tennis court is a real luxury. The ceiling is made of huge expensive glass which always lets a lot of natural light in. Initially, the court must have been kept in a good condition but after the owners left or maybe even during their time the court was converted or got converted into a dumping ground. The old abandoned and the rusted car just exaggerates the junkyard feeling of the indoor court.
The Victorian Setting
The first owner of the house seemed to have had a Victorian taste as far as furniture and entrances go. The 1930s was the American Jazz age, the decor in houses was quite artsy but this owner had a more primitive liking.
The Victorian designs were highlighted by the use of ornate jewel tones and bold prints. The arches and pillars also made an important part of the aesthetics, as shown in the picture.
The Changing Styles
The picture above shows that the interiors of the house were redecorated multiple times from the 1930s to the 70s. The bamboo chairs were an important symbol of the art deco movement in the 1930s. The liking for the Victorian style is shown by the curved ornate wood. The 50s and 60s were all about the colors and the brown in the picture was the preferred color for furniture in the 70s.
Snow Crept In
There is something really eerie about this picture. The corners of the room and the couches wearing down season after season. A lone rocking horse lying in the middle of the room in the snow that must have crept in over the decades. Nature is the only claimant of the place, wearing it down slowly and it will continue to do so until there is someone there to shut the windows. Why abandon a house that’s too luxurious?
Music Lovers
The family living here seemed to have been quite into music. The ballroom had two pianos and all the instruments from the harmonium to the radios seem to point towards the fact that at least one member of the family played instruments and also liked listening to music. The change in the kind of instruments shows that the tastes of people who lived here changed with the advancing times.
