British Woman – UK, 1940
This British woman is drinking tea. This photo was taken during the London Blitz right after a German raid, in 1940. Blitz means ‘lightning’ in German. Sitting on a heap of rubble, the devastation around this woman did not stop her from drinking her cup of tea.
Pearl Harbor Explosion – USA, 1941
Here is the destroyer USS Shaw exploding in Pearl Harbor. It was a Japanese raid during the WWII that originated the explosion visible in the picture. It was taken on December 7, 1941. The US Navy ship was repaired during the following years, having returned to Pearl Harbor one year later.
American Marine – 1944
This is an American marine that fought in the Battle of Eniwetok, during WWII. This battle occurred in 1944 on Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands. This soldier’s famous stare was shot after two days of combat as part of the Pacific campaign.
The Avengers Group
For those of you who did not know, the Avengers are real. This is a group of Jews that specialized in assassinating Nazis. These Jewish assassins used to kill Germans that were hiding after their faction lost World War II.
High-Wire Artist – Germany, 1946
Here is a dramatic black and white picture of a high-wire female artist in Heumarkt. This was a then destroyed part of Cologne, in Germany. The picture was taken after the World War II, in 1946. This was not the only circus artist that was in the town back then. It was a well-deserved break from the reconstruction efforts.
Gandhi – 1946
Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian activist. He mainly fought against the British rule, asking for independence. The leader is seated on his house’s floor with his legs crossed. In the foreground, there is a spinning wheel looming. It symbolizes the Indian fight for independence.
