John Basilone

John Basilone War Heroes

American Gunnery Sergeant ‘Manila’ John Basilone had a very impressive past. He became the only Marine to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross during World War II. At the Battle of Guadalcanal, Sergeant Basilone was able to defend a narrow pass with his gun team who with no machines, just humans against the Japanese. He turned down a safer location and headed back to Iwo Jima, where he died on the battlefield.

Jacqueline Cochran

Jacqueline Cochran War Heroes
This is pilot Jacqueline Cochran. She was the head of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and gave an extensive training to pilots for the program during WWII. The U.S. Distinguished Service Medal was given to her back in 1945. She then joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a lieutenant colonel and was later given her Air Force Command Pilot Wings and three Distinguished Flying Cross medals.

Audie Murphy

Audie Murphy did not appear to be someone who would be such a big hero. He was a short man and had a baby-face. He was a farm boy originally from Texas. His skills lead him to be one of the most-decorated heroes of WWII. How did he receive the Medal of Honor? Well, Murphy mounted an abandoned burning tank destroyer just by using a single machine gun. He was injured but somehow managed to stall the Germans long enough to mount the Allied counterattack making them retreat. He came home and starred as himself in the film To Hell and Back.

Desmond Doss

So who exactly is Desmond Doss? Well. a lot of people know him as the fearless World War II medic who single-handedly ended up saving the lives of 75 American soldiers on the Maeda Escarpment of Okinawa. This took place in the year 1945. The most incredible part is that he never even carried a weapon. He was given the Medal of Honor and he also became the first conscientious objector ever.
