A special workout plan
Under the advisory of a veterinarian, the shelter outlined a special workout plan to get Honey back to her former self. The workout included getting her into a shallow pool to exercise. The water would help ease some of the stress on her joints from the extra weight.
Slow progress
Of course, it was not smooth sailing from the get-go. “She hated the water at first, but we encouraged her to start shuffling around by giving her some carrots as a treat,” Cable recalled. She went on, “I don’t know how long it had been since she was able to walk, but being in the water helped her get moving again.”
Her amazing recovery
But, hard work and determination always bear fruit. Even though she was unwilling at first, Honey overcame her hatred of the water and started making progress. Steadily and surely through the weeks, Honey was making amazing progress. In just a couple months, she lost nearly 20 pounds! At this point, she went home with Cable to continue their fitness regime.
She started walking again
It was an emotional experience for Sue to see the fruits of her hard work. “I had her out in the backyard every day and she eventually lifted herself up,” Cable affectionately recalled. “Just to see her start walking again was amazing.”
Tender loving care
And it did not stop there. Honey also started going to hydrotherapy sessions to treat her torn ligaments in her back legs due to the extra weight she had been carrying around for so many years. The therapy would ensure that her damage would be taken care of properly so they could nicely work again.
Happy developments!
In some happy news, Honey weighed 30 pounds at her at her most recent weigh-in. She had lost an astounding 38 pounds! Honey was almost half her original weight when she had been dropped off at the SPCA.
