A Specific Quality

The local historian told the guy about the pipes that were used by the Native Americans back then that held some serious significance in their lives and culture. He told that these pipes burned properly if a hole was carved near the bottom through which the priest could easily blow at the fire during the rituals. And many don’t know about it and they create fake pipes and some are even sold without being properly analyzed. Thankfully, this pipe was not fake and had the hole at the place where it should have been. Now, it was time to carry forward the plan.

The Plan

You must be wondering about his plan. His plan was to return the pipe to the place where it should really belong. It should be with the people who really understand its historic significance. He believed that this artifact is something extraordinary which should be taken care of properly so that last for many coming years. But will the tribe accept the gesture of this good man?

The Rightful Owners

The tribe was more than happy after they heard about this man’s proposal. “We are humbled and grateful for this honorable act,” expressed Shelley Buck, the Tribal Council President of the Prairie Island Indian Community in Red Wing. She added further, “Pidamayaye (thank you) to the donor for your respect and generosity.” But she wanted to say more than thank you to this anonymous person who went through this great deal. ‘

Welcomed With Open Arms

Sheley Buck stated that this sacred pipe would have a grand welcome which will include the Prairie Island Tribal Preservation Office and spiritual leaders from their tribe, “through ceremony and community.” Jill Doerfler, the Head of the American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth even said that the pipe’s fate was decided as the tribe saw it not as a pipe but something more sacred.

Honoring The Past

This peace pipe has been with the Dakota tribe ever since and reflects all the struggle the tribe went through in the 1880s. The pipe not only holds the past of the tribe but sentiments too. When they heard about the lost artifact is coming back to them they were more than happy to receive it. Now, they have their sacred pipe with them that’ll be used for rituals and practices again.

Broken Promises

The tribe has suffered immense betrayal from the US government during the US-Dakota war. They were promised subsidies for their land but that didn’t happen. The tribe was living under poverty and their condition deteriorated further with time. We should be grateful for this man’s effort that he managed to give back one thing that was lost and now they can cherish it again.
