Those Who Talked, Disappeared
Among themselves, couples whispered about something new they got to know at work, tried to put pieces together. But people were not supposed to talk especially the people working in the plants called: K-25, S-50, X-10, and Y-12. If it was found that someone was talking too much, they disappeared mysteriously and were never seen again.
Isolated Information
The authorities told the workers in Oak Ridge that: “Everything will be taken care of”, what that meant no one knew. For some employees, it was going to take over 50 years to realize just what they were a part of and they were going to be shocked by it.
Residents Of The Reserve
Residents of Oak Ridge came from different backgrounds and had different professions. Some were engineers, others were scientists, then there were factory workers and business owners and all had their small communities. There was only one photographer allowed in the town- Ed Westcott. He was the only one who has the authority to click pictures in and out of this town and all these are from his camera.
Three Shifts
People who had the same job had to wear identification badges with their names. Every plant was bustling with activity 24*7. People worked in three shifts at these plants. What was the need for people working all the time? You’ll be shocked to know.
Too Good To Be True?
Oak Ridge, some would have thought was an ideal place to be at. Even during wartime when people around the country were struggling to keep their jobs, Oak Ridge had 0% unemployment! Each and every person in the town made enough money to afford a decent health coverage. It all sounds ideal but was not so in reality.
The Reality
Only a few selected had an inkling what was actually up in Oak Ridge. They knew the meaning of what the workers were doing and what it all was going to lead to. They knew the exact results of the whole clandestine project.
