Down The Memory Lane
Dorothy Kulczycki Schilder in an interview told that “We put the jacket and the hat on him and it still kind of fit, it was a little snug fit. He smiled and he seemed to have some recognition of some of the items and photos.” Kulczycki, the officer was overwhelmed to grace himself all over again with this proud uniform.
It was great of the museum and Dabros to return the uniform then, as what happened next was extremely depressing…
The Unexpected
Just after a few days, when the soldier from the World War II wore his uniform, he passed away on May 3rd. It was very saddening to witness that a man who till a few days back couldn’t stop boasting about his honor in the Polish army suddenly made his way to eternal silence. The museum made a right decision to return the uniform to its rightful owner, who cherished a few moments before he died…
Chance To Reminisce
Though Kulczycki could not live long enough to cherish his uniform and his past memories again and again, still it was special that at least for once he could adorn himself with the uniform which symbolized bravery. It was great of Dabros to link up the photos to reach to this war veteran.
And then his daughter made a surprising call.
Return It
Not only did the war veteran had his emotions attached to this uniform, but now even his daughter had ties with it. It was the uniform in which she saw her father that happy for the one last time before he passed away. But Kulczycki’s daughter knew what can keep her father and this uniform living. She decided to give it back to the museum where they can spread awareness about the war times and inspire people through the story of her dad, Lucas Kulczycki.
Keeping Him Alive
Kulczycki’s daughter knew that the right place for this uniform was the museum itself. It was not only a prized possession for her father but was also an artifact which dates back to the World War II. It was a precious link to the history which must be shared with the entire world. She knew that if she holds back to this uniform, it will be once in some year or two would be taken out or else would be lying at one corner of the cabinet. Thus, she decides to give it to the museum.
Here are some of the other findings from the war times, which will surely amaze you…
A Postcard
A postcard which was sent from an army medical hospital in Rockford, Illinois, 7 decades ago finally reached the former upstate New York home of the couple who in the first place sent it in the year 2012. Some 70 years ago, soldier George Leisenring’s parents met him at Camp Grant in Rockford from where he posted this postcard. He addressed it to his sisters, Pauline and Theresa Leisenring living in their family home in Elmira, NY. The postcard read “Dear Pauline and Theresa, We arrived safe, had a good trip, but we were good and tired,”. It reached that address some 7 decades later and left the family confused.
