Deep Exploration

So as they had cleared up the mess that was covering the ladder, they went ahead and descended downwards where there was a mysterious doorway. Simon then made use of his selfie stick to check whether this was a safe place to enter for the both of them or not. There were two rooms. Space under was quite big. They did not expect this at all but could see that there was ample space for people to sleep in and hide. But who were they hiding from exactly?

The Enemy Strikes

air raids

During World War II, the German air force, called Luftwaffe, held quite a few precise bombing raids on the United Kingdom and on their allies. The Luftwaffe infamously bombed portions of London, Liverpool, and Birmingham that were quite close to Simon’s home. So now upon finding this information, they could conclude that they were right about the use of this space. The two men even discovered some artifact that belonged to this era.

The Old Newspaper

So as they scoured through the rooms, the Marks’ men found a Herald newspaper from the war era. It was definitely interesting to read about what the newspapers had to write about the war in Britain. This paper revealed that life was going on as usual even though the war was raging on. These newspapers had publication dates so it was easy to decipher when these shelters were actually used to hide from the air strikes. Just imagine what life was like back then?

Underground Work

Photos such as this were clear evidence of how life was spent during those days when people had to hide from the deadly bomb blasts. It is mind-blowing to learn that below Marks’ house, there were actually people who hid from these horrific blasts. Judging from the photos, the people must have probably squeezed together to fit inside the tiny rooms. People probably read a lot during their time down there as they had nothing else to do. So how did they eat?

Alcohol Bottles?

There was yet another item that showed how people spent their time in the bomb shelters. The men found some supply of food and drinks that had been placed down there. How would anyone survive if there was no food or water to drink during all the crisis right? This old bottle had also been dug up from the air raid shelter. To know that somebody must have been sipping on this very bottle as the bombs exploded is a thought that is almost inconceivable.

An Incredible Structure

Simon and Gerald could hardly believe their eyes when they saw so many items when they went down below. “It’s incredible to think it has all been made by hand,” Simon confessed. The concrete had even been reinforced with the help of bricks, to ensure that there was nothing that would fall on the people seeking safety inside. Simon was incredibly shocked to see that the structure had still managed to stand to stand so firm and strong even though so much time has gone by.
