The Land’s History
Marks actually bought this house for £400,000 from an elderly couple who were the original owners. This house was built during the 1970s. However, what lay underneath the property was not disclosed to him when Marks bought it from them. The elderly couple was clearly aware of what lay under since someone covered it up with all that mud. They probably thought they had done a good job in covering it up too.
A Little Suspicions
When the majority of the mud had been cleared out, Marks’ 67-year-old dad, Gerald, thought that he already knew what this mystery was. He went ahead and did a little research of his own. He was researching if there were other structures of this sort online. After looking through the net and because he was aware of what the county was like while this house was constructed, Gerald was pretty sure of what he assumed.
An Odd Past
Before the owners took this property, it was actually an open field. The father and son then checked the ordnance surveys where they found out that this land was empty, that it was built on only after it was bought. So how come there was this mysterious structure inside the ground? It could also be that there was an error in the documentation of this open area.
A Piece Of History
After Gerald did what he could to look for anything that resembled the structure to clarify his suspicions, he finally found conclusions. Gerald was confident that this was a relic from World War II of some sort. The rusted metal that the ladder was made of, clarified just how old it was. It was pretty clear that this had not been in use since its construction during the 1970s. So what was it?
Sir John Anderson’s Legacy
In 1938, as World War II was in full swing, a man called Sir John Anderson was kept in charge of preparations for air raids in Britain. His team then devised a simple shelter that could be placed in peoples’ backyards. They had flexible metal walls that were used instead of concrete walls. Two million had been distributed as well. But this was not what the two men dug up.
Ducking and Covering
Gerald was convinced that this was another type of air raid shelter that was from the World War II era. How would they be aware though? Simon then did some further research to find out that there some other shelter meant for bomb blasts as well. To discover such a shelter in your own driveway is definitely something amazing! There was so much to discover underneath, more than they had anticipated…
