Deeper Down
So every day, Simon and Gerald would get to work and take away the mud that covered the shelter, getting even deeper into the structure. There was still a few pieces of history that were to be found. Since there was still so much to be discovered, the father and son duo were not about to slow down. They were determined to dig up the entirety of this structure that was indeed huge. So how deep was this structure?
More Than Six Feet
It was later revealed that the two of them had a very quick progress in just a matter of days since the big discovery. Simon had even told interviewers, “Since Saturday it’s been a case of dig, dig, dig. We’re about five feet down at the moment so it’s just another five feet to go until it’s finished. I think we’re going to have to get a skip in because there’s so much rubbish to get rid of.” So it was ten feet deep!
Next Plan
So on the topic of how the shelter was to be uncovered, Marks was quoted saying, “One of the walls has been bricked up. I’m 90 per cent sure we won’t find out any more rooms but we don’t know. They might have bricked up one of the walls when the house was built to make way for the foundations. If that’s the case we’ll just have to leave it.” It is very evident that Marks is still a little amazed by what he found under his driveway.
Preserving The Site
“It’s part of our history so it should be kept,” Simon had confirmed. He and his father are working towards preserving this site so that it does not wither away as time goes by. It truly is a spectacular discovery that must definitely be kept in shape and preserved well. This serves as an excellent example of what life was like back then, it had a historical significance for the future generations to learn about.
