Not The First Choice

It might interest you to know that Joyner was not the first choice for the character Barney. Despite undergoing five rounds of auditions, It was someone else who bagged the role. But the woman who was chosen for the role could not get along with the cast members and also had some difficulty with the costume. She was then replaced by the Joyner, who made the character memorable. Joyner made his big screen debut with Barney’s Great Adventure.

Inspiration

Joyner got his inspiration from an advert tagline that read “Breathe life into your vacation.”  He came across this tagline while going to the audition and he interpreted it as breath life into your character. While speaking to Business Insider he revealed that he gives credit for getting this role to a dream in which he gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to unconscious Barney.

Recalling The past

Joyner was born in Illinois in 1963 and worked as a software analyst for next six years after graduating from  Indianapolis’ ITT Technical Institute. Till then he had never acted. Though he also used to work as a live mannequin for a local shopping mall.

The Desire To Act

However, Joyner did have a penchant for acting. He always wanted to act on small screen. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be on television so bad. I would stand in front of the television and basically lip sync,” he recalled while interacting with Business Insider.

Perks Of Being Barney

Joyner also enjoyed some special perks for being Barney. He only needed to tell women about his work profile and they would begin to like him immediately. He also makes it clear that he never used his profile to impress women.

What A Woman Wants

“Back then, when I was single and I was dating, yeah, I was pretty well known in the Dallas area…If I ever mentioned that I played Barney, [women would be] like, ‘Ooh wow! Ohhhh OK.”…You’d be surprised how well that works….not that I would use it as a pickup line. I don’t know. I think it’s something that has to do with women and that nurturing instinct that [they] have” explains Joyner.
