Alvarenga bent down towards the water on the corner of the boat and dipped his arms till shoulder into it. While doing this he made sure no shark was swimming around their boat. Córdoba was seeing it all in awe and it was then a fish swam through and Alvarenga quickly put his hand against his chest and grabbed fish’s scales using his nails as hooks. After collecting enough fish it was Córdoba’s duty to prepare the food by cutting the fish into slices and letting them out to dry in sun. By this method, Alvarenga even managed to catch flying fish and turtles.
Quenching Their Thirst
Ironically, trapped amid the ocean which had seamless water, they had nothing to drink. It was a basic knowledge that swallowing seawater leads to hazardous health complications including dehydration and kidney damage. Alvarenga knew drinking ocean’s water would only harm them but it was equally important to quench their thirst.
Finding The Way
It clearly meant with no option around the two had to resort to their urine to quench their thirst. Along with that, the other available option was to suck the blood out of turtles they got their hands on. Initially, Alvarenga thought that this idea would work, little did he know it was only going to change the situation to worse.
A Blessing from Above
It had been two weeks now and they were still in the water fending for themselves. One day the two were lying inside the icebox when a water dop hit them. Soon enough, their deck was full of rainwater. They ran out to drink it and collected it in every possible device along with all the three buckets they had. It had been many days since they had washed, so they took off their clothes and stood in the rain for a while. It was no short of a blessing for them therefore, they planned to save the water as much as they can for later purposes.
Desperate Times
Several months had passed by with men surviving on the carcasses Alvarenga used to catch with his newfound technique. But the question was how long were they going to survive on this. There was also a time when they had to eat their own fingernails to keep their body and soul together. It was not the end of their decree, once Alvarenga had to swallow jellyfish that he caught. It almost burnt his throat but he had no other choice. They even ate garbage passing their boat that included some chewed gum, cabbage, rotten carrots and other edible things.
Heart to Hearts
Tough time had brought them closer! When they were not looking for something to eat and fighting the cold they would talk to each other about their family and childhood. Both of them wanted to meet their mothers desperately and apologize for putting them through grief so many times. The two were not sure whether they would make out of this unending ordeal alive so they made a deal.
