Catching Wind
Beatty still was waiting for the official confirmation about the bat authenticity and when it was confirmed that it is truly Robinson’s bat, he got in touch with McEntee family to see if he could borrow the bat for their display in the World College Series to inspire other young athletes. And Sue was more than happy to oblige.
Going Hollywood
It was like, the whole universe was making sure that people should know about Jackie Robinson. They found his bat in the time when World College Series was taking place and the most recent biopic on Jackie Robinson’s life was running in theatres. Chadwick Boseman had played the role of Robinson in the movie. This movie made the discovery even more special.
Spreading Excitement
Beatty was happy by this turn of events. He explained to Minor League Ball, “Everyone coming in, especially the kids, the first thing they ask about is Jackie Robinson,” he said. “So we point them to the display. The movie has been a huge plus in terms of increasing awareness of not only Jackie Robinson, but also the courage of many – not the least of whom was Branch Rickey – in order to make that happen.”
Holding On Tight
While McEntee was more than happy to lend the bat to the exhibit, but she was more excited to bring the bat home so that she can share this incredible story. “We’re going to keep it,” she announced on KCCI during her June 2013 interview. “I mean, the stories with my uncle and [Robinson]. Yeah, it’s not going anywhere.” We think that’s a right thing to do. The bat was in her family and has so many memories attached to it that it should stay with family.
