Madman Elisha Reavis

Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine

Elisha Reavis is the name of the man who got famous for being driven insane in the Superstition Mountains. He is now called the “Hermit of Superstition Mountain.” He is said to have lived in the mountains from 1872-1896 where he grew vegetables and fruits and lived a secluded life. Even the Apaches kept their distance from him as they thought that he had some supernatural energies. Even Elisha Reavis passed away and the rumors were that he was targeted because he found the secret of the lost gold mines.

It was actually the case mentioned ahead that made people question some strange happenings in the mountain.

Just like other treasure hunters Malm and Silverlock came to the Superstition Mountains in the hope to find the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine. They found some gold littered around but that could have been the result of the Peralta massacre; when it came to locating the mines- they only encountered failure. They searched for it for 10 years! And all these years of failure took a toll on their health, mind, and friendship and both met undesirable fates.

Losing Senses

Malm, now having lost his senses made his way out of the mountains to the city and incoherently kept accusing his partner of plotting against him. The police tried to aid him, to make sense of his inconsistent nonsense babbling but all they could conclude was that Malm had lost it. As a result, he was taken to a mental institution.

Silverlock had the same fate as Malm and was admitted to the mental institution too. Both friends passed away there. The mystery surrounding the mountains only intensified.

Adolph Ruth—a Sensation

Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine

After a few years, in 1931, the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine came in the news again and again for the wrong reasons. While working in Mexico Erwin, the son of Adolph Ruth came in possession of a map found in the Borrego Desert region in San Diego County. The map was of the route to the gold mines of Superstition Mountains.

Adolph was a treasure hunter, or so he claimed and so his son handed over the map to him to look for gold.

Overconfidence Comes With A Price

From previous expeditions, Adolph had acquired a leg injury but he was determined to go to the Superstition Mountains to find the gold mines that no one had been able to locate after the Dutchman. Given his physical health condition and the dark history of the mountains, friends and family had warned Adolph to rethink. He, on the other hand, was determined.

He made his journey to the mountains and started looking for the mines full of gold. There was no sign of him for 6 months and when the search party went looking for him, they discovered his stuff scattered in the wild and also a note which read, “Veni, Vidi, Vici.”

The Missing Clue

Search party for Ruth had been sent just after 2 weeks after his disappearance and the note and his things found then. It was not until after 6 months that the news of his having passed away came. His body was found dismembered and a pistol was found too, which was completely loaded. All his stuff was found but one thing was not found. The map.
