One Day Gold Spree

As a reward for his services to the Apache community, the elders decided to take Dr. Thorn to the location of the apparently lost gold mines, for a short duration of time. The condition was that he be blindfolded so that he could not make out where he was being taken and consequently, not go back. Once they reached the place, his blindfold would be taken off and he would be allowed to take back as much gold as he could with himself. The elders, however, did not consider their step properly.

He Gathered Clues

His blindfold was off and enamored by the gold, Dr. Thorn made sure to gather as much as he could. When the charm washed off a little he took notice of his surroundings. He thought it would be a better idea to take note of what was around him so that he could come back later. What caught his attention was a huge rock and today we know that rock as the Weaver’s Needle. Dr. Thorn could never return to the land of riches but Dutchman found his way.

Not surprisingly Jacob Waltz came to North America attracted by the prospects of riches. This man from Germany, like many others, had heard the legend of the Superstition Mountains and about the goldmines and he wanted to try his luck too. In 1860, he got lucky. The story goes that he saved the life of a miner and who was this miner? One of the Spanish survivors of the Apache war. For Dutchman, this person was going to provide a priceless piece of info.

The gold miner, to show his gratitude to the Dutchman gave him the location of the gold mines. He literally gave him the route. Dutchman had been wandering for the route for a while now, and all these years of looking around finally paid off. Taking the word of the soldier Dutchman made his way to the area mentioned by him. Turned out that the soldier was telling the truth and the Dutchman found himself in the possession of pure gold nuggets and raw gold bars. Gladly, he carried his loot to the city on a donkey; the people started feeling that something was amiss.

A Rich Man in Town

Not so frequently, this German on his donkey came to town with raw gold bars and exchanged them for food and other supplies. People started getting suspicious. They concluded that the Dutchman could only be getting these nuggets of pure gold from the rumored lost gold mines of Superstition Mountain. People obviously started pressuring him to disclose the mine’s location. They even followed him but he misled them to wrong places. With time, the pressure was too much for one person to handle…

Time To Double Up

If too many people found out the location of the mine, the place would soon run out of gold and lose its charm. The Dutchman knew this well. Something had to be done, but he could not do it alone. It was better to trust one person with the secret of the location than an entire town and so the Dutchman took his risks. He got his friend Jacob Weiser on board, acquainted him with the location of the mines, and decided to keep it a secret for their own needs and wants and misguide people so that they could not find it.

They could not have guessed the way their plan would backfire.
