The two teams continued competing when something very dreadful happened. In the 60th minute, Patrick Battiston, French forward jumped towards a through ball. The ball turned goal-ward hence, Patrick touched just a small part of it. He was so focused on the ball that he could not behold Harald Schumacher making his way towards it.
Collision
Schumacher collided with the man with great force. The force was so high that made Battiston lay unconscious on the ground. Not only that he underwent severe injuries including damaged ribs, wounded vertebrae, and two broken tooth. The wounds were so deep that it stayed for a long time with the player.
