So in the end, Ayres was given an award. He received an MBE in recognition of his heroic efforts. This man was also given a War Medal for bravery at sea. And incredibly, Ayres returned to sea just nine months later. He is a true example that one must face their fears in order to take control of their lives. And this amazing man passed away in 1992.
