How Much Do the Greenhorns Earn?

The greenhorns are the rookies of the crabbing world and are the lowest on the totem pole of authority. The crab boat crew is in charge of throwing out and retrieving the crab pots and sorting the catch once it’s hauled in. Greenhorns can reportedly earn between 1.5 to 5 percent of the net value of the harvest.

Calculating the Net Value of the Harvest

How is the net value determined though? Firstly, the captain’s share is subtracted, then the boat owner’s share (if applicable), and sometimes the operating expenses from the gross value of the catch. Once those numbers are accounted for, the crew can determine its share.
