Mike Arnett told that “there was a large risk to these inmates for doing what they did.” After all, nobody knew what actually happened at that moment and anyone would have thought that these prisoners were behind Gary’s condition but they weren’t.
Calling For Assistance
The inmates tried to wake Gary up but when shaking him didn’t work, they understood the seriousness of the situation. Gary wasn’t even breathing, his pulse couldn’t be sensed and the inmates knew that this matter was out of their hands now.
Almost Dead
Seeing Gary dying was upsetting yet they grabbed his radio and informed the rest of the jailers about what was going on. Listening to the sound of prisoners on the radio was shocking. Even though the prison staff was taken by disbelief, they immediately ran to the room.
Anxiety Rises
Nick Kelton spoke of that moment’s feelings, “we were worried they’re going to come with guns drawn on us.” Inmate Floyd Smith further said, “they thought it was a fight. They thought we were taking over.” Were these fears going to be true?
Banging On The Doors
Before anyone of the jailers could reach the spot, the prisoners even banged the doors that got the deputies’ attention too. The prisoners didn’t want anything bad for themselves and this move helped them. Sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Speegle ran towards the basement unaware of the exact scene that was waiting for him.
