Only in the early 1990s were female wrestlers introduced, and hence was the conception of the ‘Divas’, whose presence could range anywhere from a female wrestler, manager, valet, backstage interviewer or even a ring announcer. While the male-dominated arena is a thing of the past, and females are participating more than ever, we can’t help but have a quick reminisce about the original Divas of WWE.
Lita
This famed wrestler joined WWE in 2000 and been known all over the world for her signature red hair and a tomboyish persona. She was once a member of Team Xtreme along with her ex-boyfriend Matt Hardy, and Jeff Hardy. She has gone on to win the women’s Championship 4 times while her WWE career lasted.
Stephanie McMahon
This talented lady has often been in the headlines for the most violent storylines occurring inside the ring. She is the daughter of WWE CEO Vince McMahon. She is currently married to Triple H and is a mother of 3. She also serves as the current Chief Brand Officer of WWE.
Maria Kanellis
This former beauty queen made her debut In the world of WWE by winning the 2004 Diva search. Since then she could be seen performing backstage interviews and even entered the ring the SmackDown Live. Her retirement came in 2011 after she got married to Mike Bennett, a fellow wrestler. They recently made a come back in 2017 and also made an announcement of having a baby.
Christy Hemme
It was during the second season of WWE Diva Search when Christy Hemme debut in WWE. But soon after he training in WWE ended she left the organization to work with TNA as a manager and announcer where she can be seen working until this day. She even tried to enter the music industry with a couple of songs named Where are you and Society box.
Sable
This beauty has been known for her relationship with Marc Mero on and off the ring since 1996. Though she left the organization in 1999 she sued WWE, claiming that they harassed her and provided poor working conditions. This case was eventually settled. She has since divorced Mero and married Brock Lesner in 2006 and is a mother of 2.
Sunny
This beauty graced the blood-soaked rings of WWE in the 90’s. But she was seen retiring in 1998 after a feud between her and Sable began. Since that altercation, WWE has let go of Sunny and she can be seen working in gyms and tanning salons. Though in 2009 she performed a surprise visit to Wrestlemania with further led to several more visits in independent circuits.
Amy Weber
Before debuting in WWE Weber was seen acting in various tv shows such as CSI: Las Vegas and Andy Richter Controls the universe. It was in the year of 2004 when she finally made his debut in WWE. But she was unhappy because of a feud with Joy Giovanni and left a year after. Since then she has started modeling and in 2012 even released her own dance album.
Aksana
Before becoming a WWE wrestler she was a fitness model. This Lithuanian stunner was undoubtedly in really good shape but that alone wasn’t enough to make her a good wrestler. Even with the help of WWE, she failed to win any title matches. She has now been released by WWE after 5 years of work and she can now be seen focusing on her work as a personal trainer and lives in Tampa, Florida.
Ashley Massaro
Here we have the winner of 2005 WWE Diva hunt. She managed to get a load of votes upon revealing her real phone number on the live tv show. Soon after she left WWE she had sued that for assault inside of the U.S Army base in Iraq. She is currently living in Long Island, NY while dealing with the injury she got during her time in WWE.
Ivory
Ivory was seen entering the ring of WWE during the attitude era, she started her career alongside WWE giants Trish Stratus and Lita. While she didn’t receive fame like her co-wrestlers, she did earn a lot of respect during her pro career by winning Women’s title in the very first year of joining. Now she is working on her very own animal day-care center situated in Friday Harbor, Washington.
Alicia Fox
She made her debut in WWE in 2006 with WWE RAW. And further made a debut in SmackDown later that year. Fox held the Diva championship in 2010 and on that became the very first African-American to win the title in the history of WWE. She now works with E! in a reality show called Total Divas.
