When Chang Changfu heard about the story of Jingzhi and her parents, he desperately wanted to tell it. He is a documentarian and so he clearly has a knack for knowing if a story would be worth telling or not. He proceeded on to meeting with Qian and Xu where he asked the details of their experience. He decided to even track down Ken and Ruth. You can watch the documentary about Kati which is placed at the end.
Very Scarce Information
Even with little to no information about the couple, Chang did not want to give up on his project. He looked on the internet for anything related to an American family residing in Michigan who has adopted a young Chinese girl in Suzhou. This was all that he had but Chang did not want to lose any hope and worked hard to finish what he started.
It Took Some Convincing
After months of researching and working on his documentary, Chang finally had some base to work on. He had met with Xian and Xu but now it was time to meet the adoptive parents, the Pohlers. Ken and Ruth were quite hesitant to partake in this project and it took a lot to convince them to agree. Only after Kati turned 21 did her parents informed her about her whole past.
Asking Once More
Since Kati grew up to be quite the intelligent one, she obviously had questions regarding her past. “I thought people there would have questions about me being Chinese and American. So I asked my mother to tell me about my past again,” Kati revealed in an interview when asked about how she actually came to know about her biological parents.
She Knew It Right Away
When she was informed about who her actual birth parents were Kati immediately knew in her heart that she wanted to see them. She went ahead and contacted Chang who was working on the documentary about her life. He was happy to oblige and took her to the vegetable garden in Suzhou. This was where her parents had been forced to abandon her as a baby.
Overcome With Emotions
Just imagine, after more than 20 years of wondering where she was from Kati finally learned about her past. She was overcome with emotion and it was indeed a heavy feeling for her to process. She was first taken to the place where she had been given up which was already quite the experience for her. So you can only imagine how she would feel when she finally met her birth parents.
