Parent’s Permission

He then ended the interview with his thoughts about the dress code at Demetra’s school and schools in general. He is a firm believer that parents are supposed to be the ones who decide what their children should and should not wear to school. However, this does not apply in reality so he had to look for a means to get his point across. Tony decided to get some support from the local community.

Sharing His Opinions

So Demetra’s dad took to the internet, looking for a wider online community. He then logged into NextDoor.com. He immediately posted about his views on the school’s dress code. The kind of clothes that were not allowed in the school he listed were “tank tops with spaghetti straps,” “underwear and midriffs to not be visible,” and “short shorts (inseam less than four inches).”

Tony was determined to serve justice for his daughter and was not about to stop until he found it for her. “I mean, today it’s 90 degrees outside and she’s wearing leggings because she doesn’t want to be dress-coded for wearing shorts,” Tony revealed to interviewers, “And it’s not OK. It needs to change.” The angered dad had opened his mouth and said what he wanted to say. So how did people receive his views?

Mixed Reviews

Naturally, Tony went on to receive different opinions from various people. There was no doubt that the school dress-code became a heated debate and a topic of conversation. There were some folks who also agreed with the enraged father too. “Your post has reminded me of some fairly serious body image issues of my own that have stemmed from our cultural shaming and sexualizing of girls’ bodies,” one person had commented. Some thoroughly disagreed with him too.

Principal Does Not Agree

There was one person who disagreed with Demetra’s father. It was none other than the principal of Raymond J. Fisher Middle School, Lisa Fraser. She revealed in an interview she gave that the school’s dress code was one that had stood the test of time. “There has always been a dress code,” she claimed, “These are standards for reasonable decorum.” However, Demetra’s dad respected Principal Fraser for speaking against him and standing up for the school’s rules and regulations.

Agree To Disagree

Tony did agree with the principal of his daughter’s school in terms of how there should be limits as to what one wears at school. But he feels that the rules were to bit too extreme. “The dress code should require clothes to cover body parts – nothing should be hanging out – I agree 100 percent,” he argued, “But wearing spaghetti straps and tank tops do not make them disrespectful or appropriate.” So what happened next?
