Laura Jane Grace
A part of The Advocate’s’40 Under 40′ list, Laura Jane Grace has to face a lot of hardships to reach the position she is in today. Currently, a lead singer, songwriter and a part of the band Against Me! went through a very tough time when she decided to declare herself as a transgender in the year 2012 as it led to her wife leaving her. She was mentally broken and even decided to commit suicide.
Caroline Cossey
Caroline ‘Tula’ Cossey is famous for being the first transwoman to appear in a James Bond movie in the year 1991. She was extremely upset when a British newspaper named The News of the World made the fact of her being transgender public. She had intended to keep it as a secret and was so depressed that she even tried to commit suicide. Luckily, she stayed strong and even posed for the Playboy magazine.
Jenna Talackova
After being disqualified from the Miss Universe Canadian Pageant in the year 2012 due to the fact that she was transgender, Canadian model and TV personality, Jenna Talackova spent the next few years in depression. But, she revived herself and came back strongly to fight for the rights of the transgender community. She had undergone reassignment surgery when she was aged 19. Seeing her strong will and determination to raise her voice on this sensitive issue, she was given her own show named “Brave New Girls!”
Dr. Marci Bowers
She is the first ever woman to perform a gender reassignment surgery. American gynecologist, Dr. Marci Bowers decided to undergo a surgery herself at the age of 19 but due to the lack of funds she couldn’t and had to wait for the next 20 years to get it done. She was married to a woman 11 years prior to having the surgery and has three kids. Luckily, the surgery didn’t have a negative impact on their relationship, as they live together as “sisters” now.
Jazz Jennings
At the age of seven, American teenager Jazz Jennings understood the fact that she was a girl. Luckily, during an interview with Barbara Walters in 2007, her parents realized this fact and let their child explain her feelings. She has gone on to become very successful from that day as hse has her own show on TLC named “All That Jazz” and a successful YouTube channel.
Yasmine Petty
This American transgender model of Moroccan and Italian descent has appeared in a film named Dragula in which she played the role of a club girl. Apart from working as a model, Yasmin Petty is also an actress and a photographer. She featured on the cover of C*NDY magazine in the year 2014 along with 13 other famous transgender women.
