MacGyvering before its time
The storyline of the show went in such a way that the characters often had to create technology from scraps on the island. Obviously, this meant more on the plate for the show’s prop team, who had to think up crazy inventions made with only a few random objects to retain some authenticity.
A friendly dinosaur?
Before the imminent demise of the show, the producers wanted to introduce a new ‘character’ to ‘pep’ things up. They thought a friendly dinosaur would be the perfect addition. “Just picture it!” Schwartz remembered Stromberg saying. “Gilligan and his pet dinosaur! It’s our answer to ‘Mr. Ed.’”
What a crazy journey!
Alan Hale Jr.’s journey to his audition for Gilligan’s Island was a crazy one. He started off on a horse from his current set in Utah, he then hitchhiked all the way to Las Vegas, and then from there flew to Los Angeles for his audition! Phew!
Willie Gilligan
During the show, Gilligan was always called by his last name. There is no mention of his first name. After the show ended, Sherwood Schwartz told the world that Gilligan’s first name was Willie.
Expensive skirt
There was much more than the looks and personality of Mary Ann that made her unforgettable. One of the many skirts that the beloved character wore on the show went on to be sold for a whopping twenty thousand US dollars!
Ginger’s dilemma
Tina Louise who played the beautiful bombshell, Ginger Grant, was one of the most memorable characters in the show. So memorable in fact, that after the show was canceled, Louise could not land any new role. casting directors could not picture her as anything but the iconic redhead.
