Washington First
On July 4th, 1934 the carving began with Washington first in line. Jefferson was done next in 1936, Lincoln in 1937, and ultimately Roosevelt in 1939. They needed 400 workers to construct and fortunately, there were no fatalities while executing this scary process. It only cost $1 million dollars for the site to be completed.
The Hidden Room
What about the secret room inside Mount Rushmore? So the designer John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum always planned to keep a hidden room somewhere in the monument that has sparked up theories as to why he did so. In the photo above, the room can clearly be seen.
Purpose Of The Secret Room
The purpose was to hold the American treasures like documents and other valuable items, but because of Borglum’s death in 1941, the construction stopped. This room lies on Lincoln’s hairline where an aerial shot of the site clearly makes it visible. There were speculations that the documents would help inform future citizens of the time then and there.
What’s On The Inside?
Following Borglum’s death, the hidden room was not completed and it looks somewhat like a hallway than a room. It’s quite a hike up there so people are not really aware of what lies inside. Security keeps an eye on the room most of the time.
Keeping It Off Limits
Even though a lot of people have been to Mount Rushmore over the years, the secret room has always remained off limits. You cannot help but wonder what it inside this room and why it is kept such a secret from everyone for so long.
Constructing The Chamber
This photo shows a closer look at how the chamber had been built that make you question if they were aware of an alternate purpose for the room or if it was in fact just to store artifacts. Although Borglum’s son continued the work, the construction of the chamber was put on hold rather abruptly.
