Old Habits

Mary’s father always believed that something was seriously wrong with his daughter. She used to behave differently compared to the other people of her age. She had this old habit of entertaining people by her own made-up language. Her neighbors used to have a fun time around her.

A Sad Life

She was tired of her boring life and wanted to roam around the world, visit beautiful places and have fun. So she decided to leave her village and take off. So at the age of 19, she left her home to move and to see the world and find love.

Suicide Attempt

Mary tried to hang herself from a tree but her inner voice kept telling her that it is a sinful deed and she will be taken to hell for this. She managed to get over her stress and met a man on the way to London. She was walking to London but it seemed like she was too weak to walk that far.

Weakness Showed A Way

When she collapsed on the road, two women took her to the nearby St. Giles’ Workhouse Hospital. She was immediately admitted to the fever ward where she stayed for a month. She made a few friends who helped her get a job.

A London Life

When she left, she was wearing the same turban. She went to London and started working as a nursemaid in Clapham, a suburb of London. It was just a few months back when she left her home.

A Vagrant’s Life

When she left her job and saw nothing else as an option, she started living with prostitutes at the Magdalene Hospital for Penitent Prostitutes. The people didn’t take much time to understand that she wasn’t a prostitute and asked her to leave.
