In Awe Of Her Splendor

People were being good to her and she was receiving so much respect and attention in the new city. Caraboo even wrote letters in her own language which were equally intriguing for people as princess’s story.

Rise To Fame

The story of the exotic princess was now to be published in the newspaper, as a local newspaper seemed quite interested in her story. Dr. Wilkinson came from the city of Bath and wanted to write a long length article about the princess he interviewed her and the people who knew her story. It was later on published in the Bristol Journal. The only thing that went wrong was that her portrait was also a part of the article. What started from here was a long struggle in the life of the Princess of Javasu.

One Glance Unraveled The Mystery

Who knew this article was about to bring a drastic change in the life of Caraboo. While everyone was completely speechless by the princess’ bravery and her unique culture and languages. There was one lady who by chance looked at the newspaper that day. That’s when it all became clear.

A Commoner In Princess Clothing?

When Mrs. Neale saw the portrait and read the whole description published in the Bristol Journal, she rushed to her family members to be sure about what she has just seen. Mrs. Neale was a boarding house landlord who had seen Caraboo before. Not when the princess was wandering for six weeks but when she was known as the name of Mary Willcocks.

The History

According to Mrs. Neale, Mary was no princess from Javasu but she was the daughter of a cobbler who lived in the village of Witheridge in Devonshire, that was not too far from Almondsbury. It was hardly 65 miles distance between the two.

The Real Picture

Mary was the born in 1791 in a not well to do family. Six siblings of Mary died at an early age. She has been working hard to feed herself since the age of 8. She was usually wool spinning and weaving, and when she had time left, she worked at the farms. She even tried working as a maid at a house. The household work was too much for her to take and she quit the work as a maid within 2 months.
