Strategy To Rich Quick
As mentioned earlier, Jacobson was assigned the task of coming up with a theft-proof system for McDonald’s Monopoly game which he initially was doing with all his heart. He and his assistant auditor used to cut out the high-value game pieces and slide them into tamper-proof envelopes and finally would stash them in the secret pocket of their jacket. After retrieving the winning pieces he would send them back to the McDonald’s packaging facilities all across the country. After arriving at the destination, he would call for a forklift having french fry containers and would hide them in it. His task would end up sending the pieces out. No doubt the man was earning a handsome amount but his hunger for money was too big to get satiated by that. Jacobson wanted to make the best of his chance of handling the McDonald’s Monopoly. He had an idea!
Piece Worth $25,000
It had been a year for Jacobson working in the company. With every passing day his desire to steal increased. And in the year 1989, he decided to walk that risky and corrupted path. He began with handing his stepbrother $25,000 a winning game piece. And that was just the beginning of his twisted game and from there on, he never looked back. The continuous success in stealing made him confident and it got reflected well in his bragging that he used to do in front of other people. For instance, when a butcher told him about how he wanted to win a prize he replied how easily could he help him to get one. It was then the butcher suggested him to one of his friends who could give him $2,000 as a kickback if he agrees to help him win $10,000. Jacobson nodded immediately.
Anti-Tamper Seals
Things took a strange turn in 1995 when Jacobson received anti-tamper seals for the McDonald’s Monopoly game-piece envelopes sent accidentally by a supplier belonging to Hong Kong. The luck was surely on his side as with the anti-tamper seals he was powered to exchange the winning game pieces while they were on their route to factories located all across the United States. Jacobson would rush to the airport bathrooms so he could dodge the female auditor coming after him. In the bathroom, he would remove the seal, take out the winning game prices and get them replaced with losing ones before sealing the envelope again.
Fool-Proof System
Jacobson had no intention of discontinuing the theft and to make it more threat free he needed to have a full proof plan. He knew if the winners would come out of the same area that will surely give way to suspicion. In order to avoid that possibility, he decided to look for accomplices that he called “investors.” His investors mainly included family members and friends of friends that would give him an amount of cash to get the winning game piece. When the deal used to get finalized, Jacobson would ask his investors to go to a specific location to win their prize. He even used to train them with what to tell McDonald’s executive and staff. One of the stances included Jacksonville-resident Gloria Brown paying $40,000 and flying to South Carolina to win a prize. She told executive that she lives here so that no one could doubt her.
Showing Off His Money
Jacobson’s audacity increased manifold as he began to steal not only the small prize game but also the bigger one for his investors and in return he would take a kickback from them. As his investors usually constituted of his family members, the affluence in his family grew manifold. Despite the fact that he earned so much by theft he kept on boasting about his wealth wherever he could. The security officer ostensibly with a mild income had every luxurious item available in the world. Though the man had accumulated vast wealth in a very short span he wanted more money.
Greeting Crime Family
In 1995, Jacobson met Gennaro Colombo while waiting for his plane in Atlanta airport. The two got along very easily. Soon Jacobson realized that Colombo belonged to a notorious Colombo crime family in New York. And the man himself was an owner of a strip club operating in South Carolina. They had a lot in common. For instance, both of the men had the tendency of duping others for money. Before bidding goodbye they exchanged contact details and decided to meet soon. Shortly after their meeting, Jacobson gave him a winning game piece. The prize was a brand new Dodge Viper.
