As per the evidence, the Mayan culture, they respected the sinkholes as the entry gates to the world of the dead. Most of their customs and ceremonies were somehow related with the cenotes. One of their rituals also included human sacrifices, that they used to dedicate to Chaac, the god of rain. The human skeleton found in the caves is possibly a result of one such ritual.
Talk About The Caves
Thomas Iliffe, a marine cave researcher at Texas A&M, said in an interview, “these really are maze-like systems.” A Midnight Terror Cave in Belize contains around 10,000 bones of children, younger than 14, who were supposedly sacrificed to Chaac, the god of rain, lightning, and water.
Over 100 Artifacts Found
So far, more than 215 sites found by the scientists are not simple caves but around 140 of these contain evidence and traces of the Mayan era. It includes several man-made objects, in fact, a mask that’s said to be a replica of Ek Chaub, the Mayan god of trade. Well, the deeper the divers looked the farther in past they went, even the early age.
Artifacts Of The Ice Age?
As the divers got deeper where only technical cave divers can reach. They found artifacts from the Pleistocene era, ie, around the time when Earth was covered with ice. More than 2 million years ago, most probably the time of the early men. But the lower regions underground were dry where the people of that period might have taken shelter.
Hi-Storical Black Hole
These caves played an important role during the last stage of the Ice age. It gave way to animals as well as humans to stay safe from the extremely freezing weather. However, most of these early men and animals never made it out of the inescapable pit. This pit is named as ‘Hoyo Negro’, ie, Black Hole. It became a source of bones dating back roughly 13,000 years, that includes many Pleistocene species.
Three Phases
On the basis of all the bones recovered till now, the scientists have categorized them on three different bases. One of these is named as a completely new species. Many animals skeletons are found which we almost never thought existed.
