Larsson further writes, “We were going by motor due to lack of wind and within seconds Maiken slowed down from seven to one knot. But the bottom paint were scrubbed away at places along the waterline, Maiken has an ablative paint so it was just doing what is supposed to do. Like we’d sailed through sandpaper.”
Harrowing Sound
The noise was louder than a thunder! The whole of the crew went deaf for some time. It felt as if the end of the world was near. If not the world then their end was surely near. The noise was coming incessantly. After getting over it they looked around to find out the source of this monstrous sound. What they witnessed made them go weak in their knees.
Shooting Up
They saw an enormous fountain of water erupting at the very place they were sailing on, a few minutes ago. The water was shooting up constantly. It was a harrowing sight! Their fear had returned. Clearly, a volcanic eruption had just taken place before them. Call it their luck, they were still miles away from the spot where the eruption occurred but still, the sight was clear enough to scare them to death. What followed next was even odder.
The Sea Erupts!!
The eruption had occurred on the ‘sandbar.’ So, they had escaped the death by the end of their teeth. Had they not made up their mind of crossing the sandbar as soon as they could, they would have lost their lives for good. They confirmed if any of the members got affected by it. Everything was alright but soon things were going to take an unexpected turn.
Root Cause
The south of Late island is occupied by two active volcanoes, Home reef and Metis shoal namely. The chart in possession of Fransson showed an underwater seamount in the vicinity to Home Reef, the very spot from where the smoke was billowing out. Lastly, they realized it was a 240-foot tall volcano they perceived.
Something On Horizon
No doubt, they thanked their guiding spirit and hoped for no more troubles. All of their fear broke into laughter after the incident. There was a mixture of smoke and water in the air. The sight had gone quite blurred for them. And just when they thought everything had gone back to normal, another twist entered. As the sight began to clear up they noticed something very amazing.
