Fallout Entertainment
Another thing that the couple discovered when they went into the fallout shelter under their backyard was a lot of items that can be used for entertainment. There were multiple sources of entertainment that included board games and some copies of a science-fiction magazine called Analog. The family that built this shelter definitely did not plan to stay there uncomfortably.
A Note Pad?
The room also had a writing pad that might be useful if the person staying there would be stuck for a long amount of time. Chris Otcasek revealed in an interview, speaking about the writing pad and said, “What would you write on this? A suicide note? Anyone who built a shelter in their backyard would have to be pretty optimistic.”
Planning to Stay a While
The shelter also contained a calendar of 30 years. It seems as though the family was planning to stay there for this long time. So in the March of 2013, a radio host named John Rabe met up with the Otcaseks. He went to their place to visit the shelter and to find out exactly how it was built and what it contained. He wanted to speak to the Otcaseks as well.
A Mystery Caller
John became truly shocked to see that all the retro stuff he had heard about was actually there, that too in such a good condition still. He aired the interview and spoke about the place after going there to see it. It was not long after the show was aired that a woman called the radio station. She told the host something that was truly remarkable.
Origin of the Shelter
After the radio broadcast, a woman called the station to tell them about an amazing tale about the fallout shelter. Debra Kaufman was the woman who called the station. It turns out, the place where this shelter was found was actually her childhood home. She called the station to tell them that her father was actually the person who built this shelter for her family.
Her Father
She revealed that her dad’s name was Alvin B. Kaufman and that he had built the shelter all the way back in the year 1961. Debra Kaufman also revealed that her father was a self-trained nuclear engineer. Since Alvin Kaufman was well aware of the ill-effects that a nuclear bombing could cause, he was quick to build the shelter for his family’s safety.
