Fallout Shelter

So why build a fallout shelter in the first place and what could you benefit from it? A fallout shelter was specially designed in the 60s so as to protect people from the harmful radioactive fallout that a nuclear bomb produces. The Cold War made so many families paranoid and hence these shelters were very popular. When a nuclear bomb is dropped, it then releases debris or fallout that is radioactive in nature and can cause severe harm to all living beings. Hence it was imperative to some families that they kept their safety a priority instead of just waiting for a nuclear fallout to take place.

The Only Option

A fallout shelter would help people to keep the harmful radiations that a nuclear bomb gives out. The families can stay in these shelters until it was absolutely safe to come out after the radiations have died out. They have been designed in such a way that the family does not have to suffer that horrific death or side-effects that comes with the blasting of a nuclear bomb. The radiations would need some time to decay for people to come out and not be affected. It was the only way anyone could survive a nuclear bombing.

The Otcasek’s home was mostly built using plywood walls and had been in a good condition all these years. The shelter was also very well planned out so that it contained all the essentials that anyone would need during that time in the 60s. The room really did have all that a person would need if they had to stay there for a while. You could even say that it is like a small room apartment where the kitchen, bedroom and living area are all clustered up in one room.

Bunk Beds

Construction of the Shelter

The room also had bunk beds made from re-purposed doors that were hung using chains. This shows that the maker of this room is quite innovative and It also had built-in shelves, that as we have mentioned earlier, contained all the necessary items if a nuclear fallout ever happened. The room even had a bedpan, but if someone were to get stuck here, they would need something larger than just a bedpan.

Gamma Radiation

One of the biggest issues that a nuclear bomb results in are the harmful gamma radiation. Even if the families are safe inside the shelters, they still would not be free from all the radiations that a nuclear bomb emits. Many measures have been planned out so as to minimize the amount of radiation that could enter these fallout shelters.

Steps For Prevention

Gamma Radiation

The steps that can be taken to reduce harmful radiations include cleaning the roofs and gutters, removing the top inch of soil close to the house, rinsing off the nearby roads of the debris and dust, sealing of windows using bricks and gaps should be blocked from the gamma rays to enter. Also packing dirt against the walls, and removing trees that have fallout on them could reduce risks.
