Construction of the Shelter
The Otcasek’s home was mostly built using plywood walls and had been in a good condition all these years. The shelter was also very well planned out so that it contained all the essentials that anyone would need during that time in the 60s. The room really did have all that a person would need if they had to stay there for a while. You could even say that it is like a small room apartment where the kitchen, bedroom and living area are all clustered up in one room.
Fear of Bombs
Debra Kaufman also revealed that her father wanted to build a huge shelter with the entire community that could house a lot of people. Sadly, the other neighbors did not see the necessity to build a big shelter. They were not as fearful as Mr. Kaufman was. Alvin did not let them break his spirit and went on to construct the shelter by himself to at least protect his family.
Fresh Oxygen
Alvin Kaufman’s shelter was designed to keep him and his family of 4 safes for around 2 weeks. Some believe that nuclear fallout would lessen in 2 weeks time while others beg to differ. In the Kaufman/Otcaseks’ shelter, an air filter was there to receive fresh air. To have a shelter during the time of war is at the end of the day way safer than not having one at all.
Pre-War Riches
In other contents of the box, there were some golden watches and jewelry found stashed inside the box, from the looks of it, one could argue these might have been their family heirlooms or maybe something they might have saved up for the tough times that waited ahead of them. Whatever the reason might have been perhaps its good that the worst never happened.
