Close To Home

Listening about the officer’s son made William feel sorry for the old man. He knew the pain of losing someone close. He knew what the war was like and he could understand the police officer’s pain. When the police officer said the next thing, it brought tears to William’s eyes.

Folded Flag

The police officer saw a folded American flag in William’s dashboard. All the memories of the day when he got the news of his son’s death flashed in front of his eyes. He told William about the flag and how the cop felt related to it.

Only Memory Left

The officer told William that he received the same flag by the army officer when they gave him the news of his son’s death. This was all he had of his son who passed away in the Iraq war. William was now able to understand everything, the cop who was standing outside his car wasn’t thanking him as a cop but as a civilian and moreover as a father. The cop was still to make an odd request… Along with this request he was about to tell the reason why he stopped William in the first place.

Odd Request

After looking at the flag and thinking of the conversation he just had with the young army vet, the cop made an odd request. His son’s thought made him emotional. He asked him if he’ll mind stepping out of the car… The guy was surprised and looked at the cop out of confusion.

Asking

“Do you mind stepping out and receiving a hug?” the cop requested. William who was feeling equally emotional didn’t know what to say to the cop. The two were in need of that hug. William couldn’t believe that he was feeling he has known this stranger for like ever. That’s when the cop said something which meant everything to William.

Remembering His Son

“You remind me of my son. I pulled you over. I thought you were him. I still don’t believe it most days he’s gone,” the officer stated. Listening to this, William couldn’t deny to the cop’s request. He knew that it was the right thing to do.
