Oberyn Martell

Pedro Pascal fits quite well in the role of Oberyn Martell. That acknowledged, his looks on the show were not completely in coherence with the books. He does have the required olive complexion and dark eyes but does not don the long hair and pointy nose that the Red Viper of Dorne was famous for. Martin wrote, ” Only a few streaks of silver marred the lustrous black hair that receded from his brow in a widow’s peak as sharply pointed as his nose. A salty Dornishmen for certain.” Well, whatever he meant by salty!

Benjen Stark

Remember that uncle of the Stark family who went beyond the Wall and never came back and was speculated by the viewers to have turned into a White Walker but did not? Well, that is Benjen Stark. The show merged his and Coldhand’s identity but did not quite get the appearance right. (Surprise, surprise!) Martin wrote, “His uncle was sharp-featured and gaunt as a mountain crag, but there was always a hint of laughter in his blue-grey eyes.”

Littlefinger

Okay so, in this case, I am just being nit-picky, but hey, perfection is something that we should all aspire to. Littlefinger is a very despicable character and Aidan Gillen plays it with finesse but one wonders why his hair is so grey, he is just 30 after all- in the books. But books mention that he started aging prematurely. The problem with Lord Baelish’s portrayal is that he is supposed to be shorter in the books and have a pointy beard. Martin writes, “Petyr had been a small boy, and he had grown into a small man, an inch or two shorter than Catelyn, slender and quick, with the sharp features she remembered and the same laughing grey-green eyes. He had a little-pointed chin beard now, and threads of silver in his dark hair, though he was still shy of thirty.” Well, maybe we can forgive this small discrepancy.

Arya

Maisie Williams gels into the role of Arya like water. She is a casting success and plays the role of the fierce, revengeful, courageous Stark girl with perfection. Many people worldwide named their newborns Arya, which is a sign of the character’s popularity. Again, the flaw pointed out in her appearance will seem like a stretch on our behalf but given that Starks play a central role in the story of Westeros, detailed attention should be paid to them. Like many characters, Arya is supposed to be younger than she actually is shown in the books. Also, she was nicknamed “Horseface” in the book and to justify that, the face in the picture on the right side is lengthened.

Gilly

Gilly, who serves as Sam’s love interest and partner was supposed to be way younger than she is shown on the screen. She was a teenager and even though Hannah Murray is able to capture the character’s innocence, she looks mature. Martin writes, “she was younger than he’d (Sam) thought at first. A girl of fifteen or sixteen years, he judged”. In A Clash of Kings, we further get to know that, “Gilly was dark-haired and slim, with the big brown eyes of a doe.”
