It was a good deal for Paul Henning, the creator of the show when the owner of the mansion in which the show was filmed agreed on a payment of just $500. After the owner died in a plane crash, Paul was allowed to shoot the show in the mansion by the owner’s wife on the condition that the mansion’s address would not be revealed. But, this did not happen as the show’s popularity led to thousand’s of people gathering in front of the mansion on the day of the shoot.
The Jalopy
The 1921 Oldsmobile Model 46 Roadster was a unique thing that the producers of the show incorporated in the show. The mobile had a very interesting history and it was in the year 1976 that it was being donated to a museum.
Gung-ho Granny
Irene Ryan was a very fun loving lady who played the character of the funny and adorable granny. The fact that she would be eager for the scenes where she would get to hit Jethro and then accomplish the task brutally, is evident for displaying the naughty character of Irene in reality.
The Best Ever!
The whole show was very popular with people loving each and every episode of it. But, the episode “Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood” was the most famous of all. It was secured 62nd rank in TV Guide’s 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time List released in the year 1997.
Barbie Battle
The show ran to a bit of controversy when Mattel came up with Barbie dolls which looked like the character of Elly May from the show. Donna Douglas, the woman who played the character went on to sue Mattel for doing this without taking her permission. The matter was settled out of court.
Ruined Career
The character of Jethro Bodine in the show, played by Maximilian Adalbert “Max” Baer Jr. proved to be of mixed fate. As, it was the role which rose him to fame but on the other side acted as a reason for the early end of his career as an actor, as Max got typecasted after playing the character.
