Precious Finds
According to archeologists, the graves which they discovered in the site included some cremations too. They say that some of them are very rare and valuable. There were some large jugs too which had the bones of infants. This discovery has opened some new gates for the researchers that would definitely change the course of the history.
The Changes
“The cosmopolitan life here is so much more elegant and worldly and connected with other parts of the eastern Mediterranean,” Stager said. “That this was in contrast to the more modest village lifestyle of the Israelites who lived in the hills to the east,” he added further. But what is their origin?
The Origin
Archeologists and biblical scholars suggest that the Philistines arrived from the Aegean land. And what suggests that? It is the pottery found in the sites. But the scholars still scratch their head to find their exact location in the Aegean region. The Aegean region consists of mainland Greece, the islands of Cyprus or Crete or Anatolia (in modern Turkey).
Importance Of The Discovery
The question is why this discovery matters? It is because of the reputation which is attached to the Philistines. “Well, you can think about what it would mean if you called someone a Philistine today. It would mean they didn’t like art and they didn’t like music or perhaps they were just uncultured, and so they’ve really gotten a bad rap. But when we look at them, there wasn’t a period where we don’t see them loving art and sophistication and decoration,” said Daniel Master, co-director of the excavation team.
In Present
The whole mission to discover something life-changing started in 1985. After three decades of continuous efforts, the team full of archeologists and researchers found that changed everything for every person on this planet. Soon, this discovery would be ready for the general public in Israel Museum. “There couldn’t be a better way to end this excavation, It’s marvelous,” Stagger said.
What Do We Know?
All that we know or have heard about the Philistines is nothing good. “So much of what we know about the Philistines are told by their enemies, by the people who were fighting them or killing them, “Now, for the first time at a site like Ashkelon, we’ll really be able to tell their story by the things they left behind for us,” said Master.
