Almost There

Peter had to dig down another 10 cm before his shovel finally hit something and it wasn’t late when everyone could see the sight of a lead container buried under layers of dirt. As they removed the dirt from the container it appeared that it was a sheet of lead. So was it just the lead that was responsible for the sound that the metal detector made? Peter pulled out the folded lead sheet out of the ground and what rested underneath it left everyone astonished. Their pupils dilated as if they had seen a ghost but soon a smile that boasted of success overtook their surprised faces.

More Coins

Underneath the lead, there were a few coins of Canute and Ethelred II which were supposedly never circulated. It wasn’t a single gold coin that had fallen off someone’s pocket as more and more coins emerged while Peter and his friends began digging around the area. While Peter and his friends had not been expecting more than a dozen coins but it would soon end up being a historic feat for them.

A Hoard Of Coins

Peter was astounded by what he saw after he had finished digging. It was hard for Peter to actually believe what he was seeing as it is not every day that one gets to bump into such a treasure. There were coins in abundance and Peter was now the proud owner of these coins. Only a specialist could tell the actual worth of these coins and Peter knew whom to call.

Five Thousand Coins

Peter took no longer than a second and immediately called a local museum so they can come and collect the coins. Once they were finished counting the coins, Peter realized that they were able to collect as much as a whopping 5,000 coins of gold. And may I remind you that the coins were not only precious because they were made of gold, of course, it counts, but what made these coins more than precious was the fact that they had significant historic value to themselves.

Historical Value

The coins discovered by Peter and his friends were originated in the Saxon era which made these gold coins priceless. It was a historic moment for Peter as no one had ever discovered as many gold coins in one go before in England. Finding treasure, getting rich overnight and being a part of history for doing it all. Does it get any better? Yes, it does…

Pristine Condition

Pippa Pearce, the in charge at the museum said, “It’s a very rare treasure, and it’s rare to find so many coins altogether and in such good condition.” The coins were cleaned up and it didn’t take much effort in doing so because of the fact that they were in pristine condition when they were found. The coins were covered in dirt as they had been buried underneath the ground but the lead sheet had done a great job in saving them. The coins were later showcased at the London’s British Museum.
