Whenever the 85-year-old Berenice walks into Canberra Nursing Home, she gets entangled in the thoughts of  New York City. However, she had traveled to Europe mostly, but New York remains her dream city, the city she always wanted to visit.

“I never got to go, it’s my dream, I’d love to meet a real New York policeman,” she tells the staff at Uniting Mirinjani aged care. “Just the idea of strolling through the streets of New York and asking a policeman for directions to the nearest coffee shop.” 

Detective with a surprise for Berenice

Berenice had never expected such a surprise which she received from Detective Howard Shank of the New York Police Department. The Detective visited the nursing home in Canberra, just to make her dream come true.  

Two Years Wait was finally over

It took two years to get Detective Shank to the Canberra Nursing Home. Actually, Jo Sumner, an official at Uniting Mirinjani nursing home had asked Stephen Daniel, a close pal of his, who was working as a Federal Police Officer in Australia to contact the New York Police Department.  

The best request ever

The New York Police Department reverted back in few days. They stated that one of their officers, Detective Shank was in Sydney only for some official purpose and he would be able to visit the capital that same week. A 33-year-old veteran, Detective Howard Shank explains that this was one of the weirdest requests he ever came across but also refers to it as the best one.
