After getting his board made, Wayne wasted no time and got straight to work. Since he desperately wanted to find a matching and willing donor for Deanne, Wayne would stand outside on the streets of Farr West and would pace back and forth around the block. He would often go out and about during rush hours in the hopes that by chance a donor would take notice.
During Rush Hour
And Wayne had a good reason as to why he would go out during rush hour. “They’re slowed down. They can look at my sign — they can’t go home in a hurry,” Wayne revealed when questioned about his reason behind standing on the streets during rush hour. So was his efforts going to pay off like the Swilling couple? Would Deanne finally get a willing donor?
Overwhelming At Times
Since Wayne was now 74 years of age, he was not the fit young man that he once was. He was, however, adamant on making something happen for his sick wife. He did not let his old age stop him from working towards his goal. “I don’t walk real fast,” Wayne added, “Look at this road, how busy it is from 3 to 6 o’clock; it’s just like this.”
Something Unexpected
Wayne would at times get a little confused and disheartened. He was getting impatient because his wife clearly did not have too much time to spare. “I don’t know which way to face, so I just walk up and down,” he revealed. So was his efforts of standing out and waiting for a response ever going to bear fruit? Well, something that Wayne did not see coming, happened in just a little while.
First Response
And so when he was standing out on his first day, there was a random man who had come up to Wayne. This guy had approached Wayne to ask about the sign he was wearing. Wayne then told him about his wife’s situation which led the man to promise Wayne that he would offer his kidneys if he was a match. He seemed very eager to help.
He Became Excited
And just like that, on his first day, Wayne met with a guy who was willing to help him with his wife situation. This guy had already told him that he was willing to be a donor if he matched with Deanne. So it was natural for Wayne to get giddy and excited upon hearing this. “I say ‘Deanne, I think we have a good chance of getting you a kidney,’” Wayne revealed to interviewers.
